Field Education Policy

Two avenues for fulfilling supervised practice of ministry/service to the church are mentioned in G-14:0305j(1) and G-14:0307 of the Book of Order:
  1. Candidate completes a Field Ed Placement through his/her seminary. This program shall approximate the requirements outlined below in Section II.

  2.
  3. Candidate arranges a placement approved by the CPM. While each such placement should be based on the needs of the candidate, the general guidelines are as follows:

  4.
    • The placement is in a church, preferably Presbyterian, that considers such a placement part of its mission and under a pastor who has the desire, time, and ability to supervise a candidate and contribute to his/her professional growth.

    •
    • During the placement, the candidate will be exposed to a broad range of pastoral duties - e.g. worship planning and leadership, including preaching and experience assisting in funerals and weddings; hospital/home visitation; leading of small groups and/or committees; program planning; Session meetings.

    •
    • The placement will last for a minimum of one academic year and involve an average of 10 - 12 hours per week.

    •
    • The candidate and supervising pastor shall agree to meet at least monthly to reflect on the candidate's ministry skills, questions and areas for growth. Both candidate and pastor shall submit a report to the CPM two times a year, describing duties, performance, and areas for growth. Additional feedback might be given the candidate by a committee of lay people who meet periodically with the candidate.

    •
    • Ideally these would be stipend positions with the monies coming from the church involved and/or other sources.
